Have you tried heirloon seeds. I think they bred out some of the bitterness..

Let me try rephrasing that in English. I believe green peppers have been bred to a blander, more generic (ie: acceptable) taste. Heirloom seeds might get you back to the taste you recall.

Of course, remember that soil components contribute to the overall taste, so be sure to include whatever chemical waste was rampant during whatever time period you enjoyed peppers.
