At this friend's wedding dinner, she mentioned how much she loved visiting Wyoming, and how it reminded her of Slovakia (in that it was homogenous--her word for 99.99999999% white) and how, in her opinion, it was the "real" America. I tried to point out that the Western frontier, Manifest Destiny, etc., had a huge role in shaping the American conscience, but homoegeneity was not exactly one of the fundamental characteristics of the American character--that was the antithesis! It took me a couple of years to realize that Slovakians are fairly conservative people, and all she was doing was voicing what she'd grown up with.

I have a hard time learning to pick my battles... ;)))
