Demel is usually packed, but it's worth trekking to the back to see what their pastry chefs are up to.

Sacher torte at the Hotel Sacher was disappointingly dry when we tried it there (a good 6 or 7 years ago, though). (Sorry, Sacher torte purists!) ;)

In my view, the best thing about being in Austria in summer* (besides the apricots) is the heurigen: pop-up restaurants run by small wineries, usually family-owned. It's not entirely possible to get this in Vienna, but Grinzing is the closest. Pardon me for linking Rick Steves, but in this case Rick is right on the money to lead with heurigen. :)
*Oops, you said fall. I think Grinzing is still open in the fall--those outside of town are usually closed by then.
