Just wondering out loud, could it have been residual from cleaning the grating device?

They must use a mechanical device to grate all that cheese. Could you possibly have gotten the first batch run through it after a cleaning, and thus the chemical smell/taste? Just trying to think of reasons it would be infrequent...
